B2B Content Marketing Costs in 2026: Freelance, Agency, and In-House Benchmarks

Primary-source 2026 cost benchmarks for freelance B2B content writing, agency packages and in-house teams, with transparent scope and calculation examples.

B2B Content Marketing Costs in 2026: Freelance, Agency, and In-House Benchmarks

The cost of B2B SaaS content depends on the work you’re buying. A freelance writer might handle a research-heavy comparison, an agency might manage the whole campaign, and an employee might take on ongoing planning, writing and coordination. Their prices make sense only alongside the responsibilities included.

The pricing ranges below draw on three types of original evidence: the Editorial Freelancers Association’s 2026 rates survey, a 2026 analysis of 291 publicly advertised agency offers, and U.S. government wage data. The tables separate freelance writing fees, agency packages and employed-worker compensation.

Use the per-word figures to scope writing assignments, the agency packages to compare monthly services and the salary figures to plan an employed role. The tables identify each source’s unit and period.

How much does freelance B2B SaaS writing cost?

The EFA’s 2026 Rate Chart is based on a survey conducted from November 2025 through mid-January 2026, with more than 1,100 respondents reporting what they charged during 2025. Under work-for-hire blog posts, the published median-rate range is 25–45 cents per word. Blog ghostwriting is shown separately at 25–40 cents per word.

The chart reports median-rate ranges by service category among the editorial professionals who answered the relevant question. Actual quotes can be higher or lower depending on subject expertise, turnaround time, technical product testing, interviews, research and whether the fee includes revisions.

Business and marketing writing is a separate rate category

The Editorial Freelancers Association’s chart does not use one catch-all rate for all commercial writing. Respondents categorized blog posts and business/marketing assignments separately, and it also distinguishes work for hire from ghostwriting. These categories are potentially relevant to SaaS commissioning, but none is a statistically representative sample of B2B SaaS writers alone.

Reported EFA writing category Median-rate range per word Reported hourly-rate range Period Source
Blog posts, work for hire $0.25–$0.45/word $74.50–$87.50/hour 2025 respondent work; 2026 survey report EFA
Blog posts, ghostwriting $0.25–$0.40/word $75–$100/hour 2025 respondent work; 2026 survey report EFA
Business/marketing, work for hire $0.32–$0.875/word $65–$75/hour 2025 respondent work; 2026 survey report EFA
Business/marketing, ghostwriting $0.50–$1.00/word $87.50–$125/hour 2025 respondent work; 2026 survey report EFA

The published per-word and hourly ranges are alternative billing observations from survey respondents, not figures to add together or a conversion showing the same person’s earnings. Response counts varied by question. For a real proposal, first specify who owns product testing, original interviews, fact-checking, editing, revisions, screenshots and publishing; a billing rate without scope remains an incomplete comparison.

What the per-word benchmark looks like per article

Article length At $0.25/word At $0.45/word
1,000 words $250 $450
1,500 words $375 $675
2,000 words $500 $900
2,500 words $625 $1,125

Calculated from the EFA’s reported per-word ranges for blog writing. Product testing, interviews, design and other services would be quoted according to scope.

Consider two 2,000-word assignments. One summarizes public documentation; the other requires five software accounts, product testing, screenshots, pricing checks and customer interviews. The second requires more research, access and verification, even though the final article is the same length.

When assessing a freelance quote, ask what research, interviews, product access, screenshots, briefs, editing and revision rounds are included. If product research and source checks are excluded, your internal editor may end up doing those tasks after receiving the draft.

How much does an agency charge for content marketing?

Content Marketing Services analyzed 291 public offers from 122 agencies in a study published in September 2026. Of these, 167 advertised fixed or starting prices. For a comparable cohort of monthly SEO content packages, the median was $2,500 across 19 offers from 10 agencies, with published prices ranging from $850 to $10,000. Monthly content strategy packages had a $3,000 median across 18 offers from 10 agencies and ranged from $1,500 to $10,000.

The advertised packages cover different scopes. For example, one monthly offer may include production and editing, while another includes a technical audit, search strategy or ongoing reporting. Check the deliverables behind the figure before putting it into a budget.

In fact, a second agency package scope study coded 769 stated deliverables from 211 public packages across 70 agencies. Content and creative production appeared in 150 packages, or 71%. The wording of public packages was less consistent about other services, including measurement, planning and distribution. The quoted scope should still be checked with the agency before comparing proposals.

What the agency pricing sample actually contains

The published offer counts are as important as the package medians. The agency study recorded 291 public offers from 122 agencies during August and September 2026. Only 167 offers, or 57%, disclosed a fixed or starting price in U.S. dollars. Another 79 offers were explicitly free, and 45 required a custom quote. A free consultation and a monthly content retainer serve different purposes. Compare only offers that cover the service you intend to buy.

Publicly advertised offer type Recorded offers Scope Year Source
Fixed price 87 Stated package prices 2026 Content Marketing Services
Starting price 80 Published floors, not final quotes 2026 Content Marketing Services
Free offer 79 Usually consultation or assessment offers 2026 Content Marketing Services
Custom quote 45 No public numerical package quote 2026 Content Marketing Services

The SEO-content figure comes from 19 publicly listed offers across 10 agencies; the strategy figure comes from 18 offers across 10 agencies. When requesting a quote, compare the services behind those published figures: research, writing, editing, reporting and account management.

How clearly do public agency packages define their scope?

In a separate coding study, Content Marketing Services reviewed 211 publicly advertised packages from 70 agencies, classifying 769 stated deliverables. This measured what package pages explicitly promised, not what agencies ultimately supplied under contract.

Scope item or disclosure Packages Share of 211 packages Evidence period Source
Content and creative production explicitly stated 150 71% 2026 offer-page review Scope report
Planning and research explicitly stated 104 49% 2026 offer-page review Scope report
Measurement and reporting explicitly stated 66 31% 2026 offer-page review Scope report
At least one deliverable had a stated quantity 94 45% 2026 offer-page review Scope report

The advertised descriptions vary in detail. Ask agencies to spell out deliverables, revision rounds, reporting and who handles specialist work before comparing monthly fees.

Why the retainer price alone is misleading

One $2,500 package might cover four drafts. Another might include a site audit and reporting alongside one article. Ask for the deliverables, research depth, editorial owner, approval process and technical tasks in writing.

What does an in-house content writer cost?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $76,910 for writers and authors in May 2025, while editors had a median of $77,920. These figures were published in the current 2026 occupational outlook data.

The wage data covers employed workers across US industries. A SaaS hiring budget also needs to account for benefits, payroll obligations, tools, equipment, management time and recruitment. For a hiring budget, add benefits, payroll costs, tools, equipment and management time to the proposed salary.

Employer costs extend beyond wages

A separate U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics employer-cost survey measured average hourly compensation across private-industry workers in June 2026. It recorded $46.89 per hour in total employer compensation, comprising $32.82 in wages and salaries and $14.07 in benefits.

Compensation measure Average employer cost per hour Share of compensation Year Source
Wages and salaries $32.82 70.0% June 2026 BLS
Benefits $14.07 30.0% June 2026 BLS
Total compensation $46.89 100% June 2026 BLS

The 2026 employer-cost figures cover workers across industries. For a specific writing hire, start with the proposed salary, then add employer contributions, benefits, software, equipment and expected management time.

An in-house writer can join product reviews, read support conversations and build company knowledge across assignments. The trade-off is a continuing employment cost and the need for clear editorial management.

A better way to compare freelancer, agency and in-house costs

Compare the full cost of delivering the work, including internal review time. For example:

  • Production: written articles, landing pages, case studies or original research deliverables.
  • Research: product testing, customer or expert interviews, data verification and source collection.
  • Editorial: briefs, editing, fact-checking, revisions and approval management.
  • Design and publishing: charts, screenshots, CMS formatting, images and on-page optimization.
  • Distribution and measurement: newsletters, social repurposing, reporting, refreshes and sales enablement.

For two specialist comparisons a month, a freelancer working directly with a product marketer may be sufficient. For a program spanning briefs, landing pages, design, publishing and distribution, budget for the additional roles and their coordination.

Sample monthly budgets for outsourced content writing

The following examples apply the Editorial Freelancers Association’s reported blog-writing rates to three different monthly workloads. They provide a starting point for scoping a writing budget.

Example workload Calculation Illustrative writing cost
2 articles at 1,500 words 3,000 words × $0.25–$0.45 $750–$1,350
4 articles at 1,500 words 6,000 words × $0.25–$0.45 $1,500–$2,700
6 articles at 2,000 words 12,000 words × $0.25–$0.45 $3,000–$5,400

A complete quote should specify which research, editing, design, publication and distribution tasks are included alongside writing.

Build a quote request that exposes the real cost

Suppose you’re commissioning four 1,500-word software comparisons a month. Specify which products need testing, who supplies account access, which screenshots are required and which feature claims need an expert review.

I’d send the same brief to each provider and ask them to fill in these rows:

Scope item Specify before requesting a quote What to compare in the response
Research Four topics, buyer intent and target products; number of product walkthroughs or expert interviews Who performs the research and how many hours or sessions are included
Writing and editing Four articles of roughly 1,500 words; structure, editorial review and source checking Who writes, who edits and the number of revision rounds
Assets Screenshots, comparison tables and any diagrams that need to be designed Whether source files, image rights and CMS-ready formatting are included
Publishing WordPress upload, metadata, internal links, accessibility details and preview checks Whether the provider delivers a document or a live, quality-checked page
Maintenance Expected pricing and feature refreshes after publication How updates are scoped, priced and scheduled

A proposal covering product testing, screenshots and WordPress publishing has a wider scope than a document-only writing assignment. Price both against the same deliverables.

Estimate the internal workload too

Assign a product contact and editorial approver before commissioning the four articles. Estimate their time for demos, source checks and reviews, then include those hours in the project budget.

Research and source dates

The Editorial Freelancers Association’s 2026 rate chart reports work billed during 2025, from a survey conducted between November 2025 and January 2026. More than 1,100 editorial professionals participated, with response counts varying by writing or editing category.

Content Marketing Services’ agency pricing study recorded 291 publicly listed offers from 122 agencies. The underlying agency pages were reviewed in August and September 2026. Its companion report examined how 211 publicly listed packages described their included services.

The employment benchmarks come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ May 2025 wage figures and its June 2026 employer compensation release. I use the published figures in the relevant comparison tables above.
